The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). HCWDC is a private, nonprofit organization that funds and conducts humanities-based cultural and educational programs for Washingtonians in every ward. It is not a Federal or a District agency.
HCWDC is governed by a 23-member volunteer board, five of whom are appointed by the Mayor, and has a small staff . HCWDC is a diversified humanities organization that began in 1980 as a grant making agency and has grown to become both a funder of community projects and a provider of programs, insuring that public education in the humanities reaches diverse audiences across wards, neighborhoods, and cultures.
Federal funds received from the NEH primarily support the Council's grant program. The HCWDC awards about $125.000.00 annually to support many free programs, including discussions, film festivals, exhibits, lecture series, and documentary films.
HCWDC seeks individual, foundation, and business support through its Annual Fund for outreach projects such as the Humanities Resource Center, which loans documentary videos and other resources for classroom and community-based projects, and reaches out to new audiences.
